Shepherd Pipes – Tatiana Salutrinskaya
Tatiana Salutrinskaya (1915-1995), a Russian composer and pedagogue trained at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, wrote many works for young pianists. Shepherd Pipes ( also known as The Shepherd Plays) belongs to this repertoire: a simple, clear, and singing melody inspired by the shepherd’s flute.
Adapted to the Celtic harp, the piece takes on a special character: its repeated motifs and contemplative mood can create a mystical atmosphere, reminiscent of landscapes and legends from the world of The Lord of the Rings.
I offer two versions, for 34-string and 27-string harps, which may be played separately or combined as a musical suite.
Sonatina in C Major – Cornelius Gurlitt
Cornelius Gurlitt (1820-1901) was a German composer and pedagogue, well-known for his student works that are both accessible and musically refined. His Sonatina in C Major is a perfect example of his clear and elegant style: a classical language inspired by Mozart and Haydn, designed to develop both technique and musical expression for beginner and intermediate players.
Transcribed for the Celtic harp, this sonatina retains all its freshness and classical charm. It provides an excellent opportunity to practice clarity of phrasing and balance between the hands.
