“Merlin in the Cradle” belongs to the vast cycle of Arthurian legends rooted in the Breton tradition, notably collected and preserved in the 19th century through Barzaz Breiz by Théodore Hersart de La Villemarqué. As is often the case with these ancient songs, the boundaries between lullaby, mythological narrative, and fragments of oral memory remain fluid.

In this harp arrangement, I have chosen to offer a progressive approach to the piece, allowing each player to enter this mysterious atmosphere at their own pace.

A first “Discovery Version” provides a simple approach, with a stable and accessible left hand, allowing the melody and narrative flow to remain at the center of the music.

A three-step evolving version then explores the piece more deeply:

• a first level of simple, open harmonization,

• a second level enriched by the use of the Lydian mode, bringing a luminous, floating, and slightly unreal color,

• a third, more advanced level, developing arpeggios, resonance, and silence, in order to enhance the

  mysterious and dreamlike atmosphere of the piece.

The choice of the Lydian mode is particularly meaningful here: it reinforces the sensation of a suspended world outside of time, perfectly aligned with Merlin’s character, a child already turned toward the invisible and destiny. Thus, “Merlin in the Cradle” becomes more than a simple tune: a true musical journey, moving from an intimate lullaby to a mythological echo, where the harp gradually accompanies the birth of an ancient imagination.

“Merlin au berceau” appartient au vaste cycle des légendes arthuriennes issues de la tradition bretonne, recueillies et transmises notamment au XIXe si cle dans le Barzaz Breiz de Théodore Hersart de La Villemarqué. Comme souvent dans ces chants anciens, la frontière entre berceuse, récit mythologique et fragment de mémoire populaire reste mouvante.

Dans cette version pour harpe, j’ ai choisi de proposer une lecture progressive du morceau, permettant à chacun de s’ approprier cette atmosphère mystérieuse à son propre rythme.

Une première version “découverte” propose une approche simple, avec une main gauche fondamentale et stable, afin de mettre en valeur la ligne mélodique et la narration du chant.

Une version évolutive en trois étapes permet ensuite d’ explorer plus profondément l’ univers sonore du morceau :

• un premier niveau d’ harmonisation simple et ouverte,

• un deuxièmeniveau enrichi par l’ usage du mode lydien, qui apporte une couleur lumineuse, flottante et légèrement irréelle,

• un troisième niveau plus avancé, développant les arpèges, les résonances et le travail du silence, afin d’ accentuer le caractère mystérieux et presque onirique de la pièce.

Ce choix du mode lydien n’est pas anodin : il renforce la sensation d’ un monde suspendu, hors du temps, en parfaite résonance avec la figure de Merlin, enfant déjà tourné vers l’ invisible et le destin.

Ainsi, “Merlin au berceau” devient plus qu’ un simple morceau : une véritable traversée musicale, allant de la berceuse intime jusqu’ à l’ écho mythologique, où la harpe accompagne pas à pas la naissance d’ un imaginaire ancien.
