"In the Bleak Midwinter" began its life as a Victorian poem by Christina Rossetti, published in Scribner’ s Monthly in January 1872 under the original title A Christmas Carol. In 1906, Gustav Holst set the text to a melody named Cranham for the English Hymnal. His version is solemn and lyrical, designed to be sung by congregations.
