Hurt — Johnny Cash
Some songs seem as though they were written for a particular voice. Hurt is one of them. Originally written byTrent Reznor for Nine Inch Nails, the song was released in 1994 on the album The Downward Spiral. Several years later, Johnny Cash gave it a deeply personal interpretation on his album American IV: The Man Comes Around, released in 2002.
In Johnny Cash’s voice, Hurt takes on an entirely different dimension. His deep, fragile and stripped-back voice transforms this dark song into a moving reflection on pain, regrets, memories and the passing of time. Without changing the essence of the lyrics, Cash gives the song an intimate resonance that seems to tell his own story.
The famous music video, directed by Mark Romanek, reinforces this feeling. We see an aging Johnny Cash surrounded by images from his life and career, creating a powerful portrait of an artist looking back on his own journey.
The Harp Arrangement
I wanted to bring this beautiful interpretation to the harp while preserving its quiet, melancholic and deeply intimate character.
There is no need for elaborate effects here: a few carefully chosen notes, moments of silence and an expressive melody are enough to leave space for the emotion. The harp gives the song a different colour, softer and more ethereal, while preserving the sense of vulnerability that makes Johnny Cash’s interpretation so powerful.
A piece to be played with restraint and sensitivity, taking the time to let the notes… and the silences… resonate

j'ai souhaité transposer cette magnifique interprétation à la harpe en conservant son caractère sobre, mélancolique et profondément intime.
Ici, pas besoin de beaucoup d’effets : quelques notes, des silences et une ligne mélodique expressive suffisent à laisser toute la place à l’émotion. La harpe apporte une couleur différente à cette chanson, plus douce et aérienne, tout en conservant cette sensation de fragilité qui fait toute la force de la version de Johnny Cash.
