In Silence, the Hands Speak: Rediscovering Your Harp Through Sight
Newsletter Mars 2026
During a recent lesson, one of my students felt stuck. She was practicing regularly, doing her best… and yet, the same mistakes kept coming back.
In situations like this, I often suggest recording a video. But this time, I gave her a slightly unusual instruction: watch the video again… without sound.
And suddenly, everything shifted.
Without relying on listening, her attention moved elsewhere. She began to notice things she had never really seen before — finger positions, unnecessary tension, small automatic movements.
That’s when an idea came to me.
What if we deliberately removed sound during practice?
Since then, I’ve started suggesting the use of earplugs during certain exercises.
It helps shift your focus entirely toward visual awareness and physical sensation. You observe, adjust, refine… often with surprising precision.
You can also use a mirror, just like dancers or dressage riders do. It becomes a powerful tool to check your posture, the shape of your hands, and the quality of your movement.
It may sound unusual… but it is remarkably effective.
